I am most at ease when needle, thread and material are at hand. It is no wonder my husband helped set up my quilting studio at home; built a full size portable cutting table for the motor home, and I found part time employment at Sew Smart sewing and quilting store even before I retired from teaching art. Here, Mary Wilke, storeowner, and I are discussing what materials to cut into fat quarters and project kits.

The next picture is the “Class Wall”. When not in my quilt studio, or on the road, you can most often find me at Sew Smart in Wausau, especially mid September through mid April. Why not stop in to visit. You can also visit Mary’s online store at: www.sewsmartonline.com

A week after traveling to Chicago with my quilting friends to attend the International Quilt Festival I “retreated” to Whitehaven B&B, for my semi-annual weekend getaway with more quilting friends. Alas, too much wine, dining and quilting to read Jennifer Chiaverini’s newly acquired book The Quilter’s Homecoming. Not to worry, there was plenty of time after beginning our journey to Goreville, Illinois. Finished, I have now started Wedding Ring by Emile Richards – a book exchange with my friend, Joanne Schlaefer. If I like Richards' style I intend to buy more of her books. Chiaverini’s recent book was good but I did not enjoy it as much as her earlier works.

At the Festival, friends and I attended a lecture, Lo Carb Quilting presented by Marti Michell. She was very organized, had many excellent samples and best of all her section-by-section quilting does appear to be less stress. My Festival companions and I agreed the quilts from two years ago were more ‘jaw dropping’ than this year.

The Whitehaven retreat was informal and blessed by great spring weather allowing us to get outside. On the dock I took some “me time” to work on a quilt I started last fall. The leaf patterns employ regular and reversed appliqué that took until this spring to complete. I was able to finish basting shortly before leaving for the International Festival and in time to take with me to Whitehaven.

Using my Hinterburg hoop I am busy hand quilting the top paying special attention to the veins in the leaves. Hopefully I will finish in time for the Pine Tree Quilter’s Guild’s biannual Quilt Show the last weekend in September.

This spring, Dennis, my husband, and I traveled to Southern Illinois. Before settling in to some serious work on one of my current projects we visited a number of State Parks, two wineries, a luscious chocolate factory and some antique stores – I added to my Iris Glass Ware collection and picked up some more antique quilt tops and material. The best was being able to visit the Paducah Quilt Show.

Now that we have taken a break from site seeing, Dennis has gone bass fishing and I have gotten busy with another project I started two weeks ago. This is my "On-the-Road" studio. I like Kim Schaefer’s Folk Art Projects and am almost done with machine piecing together a large wall hanging.

In between I am also working on an ‘orphan quilt’. Some time ago a woman in the Pine Tree Quilt Guild acquired 55 star blocks made of feed sack. She knew I like antique blocks and wanted to know if I would adopt and finish the quilt. Before I could get started I needed to create an interlocking block. I decided on a hexagon. And in keeping with the era I am hand piecing and hand quilting this full sized quilt.

Thanks for visiting,

Sally
